No amount of praise can be too much for Hospice of the Valley or my Dementia Educator, Kristina Gunther. My wife was diagnosed with dementia early this year. Once the initial shock was passed, I had to find out what that meant for us in practical terms. A friend suggested Hospice of the Valley as a place to start researching what is available. That was the best advice I have had on this journey. This is not the traditional version of 'Hospice' where patients are cared for during their final days. Thy have ane outreach program which aims to provide help, advice, and resources for those of us caring at home for loved ones with dementia. Everyone I have interacted with at HOV has been very knowledgeable, professional, friendly, and willing to assure we have the help we need. Kristina Gunther is a Dementia Educator and our assigned contact with the HOV Dementia Outreach program. When Kristina was assigned to work with us, I went from total ignorance about what was available to having expert-level knowledge just a call or text away. Her knowledge of resources is encyclopedic, and her caring demeanor would make any nurse proud. Add to that her helpful attitude, and she allowed me to go from 'dear in the headlights' to 'I got this'. She is a sanity saver, for sure, and I can't thank her enough for her advice, direction, and care.

Kristina is amazing and has helped me so much with my grandmother. We met with her and she is very understanding and knowledgeable. She was always positive and said can do statements I can appreciate. In this time of need any positive statements are a great mood booster. Kristina Gunther has been a terrific lifeline for our family as we navigate my dad's dementia diagnosis. She has made multiple in-home visits to Sun City West, AZ, and has guided us every step of the way in the past year and a half. Kristina put us in touch with a social worker who arranged for my dad to participate in the Benevilla day program for people with dementia--free--two days a week. She guided us to resources for assisted living should we need that in the future. She streamlined my parents' medication routine. She provided us with more effective communication techniques. She made sure my parents had an emergency plan in the event of a crisis. During the most recent visit she contacted the home care helper agency we had met with previously and arranged for an initial visit, just as a get-acquainted session. In short, we are better equipped to handle the daily ups and downs of caring for a person who has dementia. She has been invaluable. Sue Byrne
